Making Costumes

How to Make a Medieval Costume

Materials:

  • A Pillow Case
  • Red or Blue Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors (sharp)

Instructions:

  1. Fold the pillow case in half, then half again and press down to create creases.
  2. Unfold the pillowcases and draw lines in the creases you have made (on both sides) so you have 4 equal quarters on each side.
  3. Cut up the sides of the pillow cases (down the seam line) so that the pillow case can be laid out flat.
  4. Paint alternate sections of the pillow case in the colour of your choice (I used red and blue) and then paint a cross in the section that will be the front, top left when wearing.
  5. When dry, cut a head hole in the centre of the pillow case - it is now ready to wear.

Shooting Day One - Character Costumes

Nessa Green - Played by Alex Duffy.

Her characters style is quite laid back. She's not a girly-girl so therefore I have given her quite a gender-neutral style. This contrasts to the style of her best-friend Lily, who we meet in later scenes. Her character is pregnant so therefore she always wears a bump under her clothes. Due to this she often wheres baggy t-shirts and flannel shirt. her style is quite indie and different whilst still being casual.

Gibby Patterson - Played by Harry Watkin.

Gibby is one of three of the nerds who are equal protagonists in my trailer. Although all nerds, they all have their unique qualities and styles. Gibby is the computer geek and his style is trousers being worn too high, a shirt and socks and sandals.

Eugene Fitzherbert - Played by Luke Rogers.

Eugene is another one of the three nerds and he is the maths geek. His style is skinny trousers, smart shoes, long sleeve shirts, bright ties or bow ties and braces.

Fredrick Walters - Played by Toby Hall

Fredrick is the last of the three nerds who is the science geek. He wears loose trousers such as chinos, leather shoes, bright shirts, bow ties and a lab coat.

What I Learnt From The Camera Workshop

By completing the camera workshop I gained knowledge of how to use a camera, using different techniques and different shooting methods that can be use in order to make my trailer look more professional. I practiced using pieces of equipment which are new to me such as a tripod and a dolly, Practicing with them now means I will be more familiar with how they work by the time I get to do my actual filming, which will help to ensure that my final product is of a higher quality.

Principle Photography:

  • I must make a shot list and a storyboard before I start filming and ensure that I follow these throughout as they will help me with consistency and continuity (and I will know what I need to shoot and where.)
  • I must shoot each scene a minimum of three times for three reasons
  1. It will help my continuity when editing.
  2. I will have a variety of shots and therefore will have a choice of which is best to use in my trailer.
  3. If something is wrong in one of the shots that I didn't notice whilst filming (e.g. an actor makes eye contact with the camera or the top of someones head is out of the shot) I have other shots of the same scene I can use instead.
  • It is best to leave a few seconds before and after the scene when shooting as it will help me when editing my trailer and also ensure that nothing is accidentally cut out (e.g. the first word of a piece of dialogue.)
  • I should do blocking in the locations I am filming in to allow me to find the best positions for the camera and actors.
Camera Position/Movement:

  • Different camera angles will have different meanings and therefore will provoke different meanings, e.g a high angle shot will show vulnerability whereas a low angle shot will show dominance.
  • I should decide before filming how I would like the footage to come out, for example if I know I want steady footage, I should use a tripod whereas if I want a more rough and shaky footage I will hold the camera by hand.
  • Some camera angles work well with other and compliment the scene, e.g. a close up is followed up well with an eye-line match.
Framing:

  • When filming I must remember headroom and moving/looking space must be given in order for a better quality shot.
  • The rule of thirds is a very important framing method as it connotes all different meanings, for example if someones in the centre of the frame, it will mean they are the centre of this seen and are likely to be a protagonist.
Distance:

  • The use of depth of field is just as important as the rule of thirds as proxemics can change the mood of a scene.
  • I must remember to use the correct focus and zoom on the camera.
Lighting:

  • Lighting can effect the continuity of a trailer.
  • Flat light (which occurs due to poor weather conditions) will reduce the quality of your footage.
  • Use light effectively for what you are wanting to shoot.

Camera Workshop - New Equipment

Previously whilst studying Media, I have only worked with still images. Therefore, this being my first time working with moving images there are pieces of equipment which are new to me. Due to this I completed a camera workshop before I started my filming to familiarise myself with the new equipment and shot types.

Tripod
What is this used for?
This is used to stand my camera up and keep my shots steady. This cuts out any shakiness that would occur with a handheld camera. This can be adjusted to any height or angle to suit whichever shot I desire.

Dolly

What is this used for?
This is used for moving shots such as tracking, backwards tracking, arc shot etc. These wheels attach to the bottom of the tripod and allow me to push and move the tripod and camera around smoothly when filming, which allows for high quality action shots.

Boom Mic
What is this used for?
This is used for clear diegetic dialogue when filming. This attaches to the camera and improves the quality of sound that it picks up.
Note: For outside shots cover this with a muff to block out 'wind sounds.'

Camera Workshop - Shot Types

These are a few examples of some of the shots I tried.

Making the Baby Bump

Materials:

  • 2-4 rolls of kitchen roll.
  • A large mixing bowl.
  • A bottle of PVA glue.
  • 2 pieces of long ribbon.

Instructions

1. Put some glue in a bowl and mix with water. with a 2:1 water/glue ratio.
2. Rip off a whole roll of kitchen roll and tear into their individual squares.
3. Fold each square in  half, and then half again.
4. Individually dip each one into the water-glue mix and apply to the bottom of the mixing bowl (which should be the top as the bowl is upturned.)
5. Layer these on top of each other in a pyramidal formation to gradually turn the flat bowl surface into a more rounded shape.
6. As the maché mixture is very wet it will be mold-able, so mold the pyramid into a more rounded shape.
7. Allow at least 48 hours for this to dry.
8. Attach a ribbon to either side of the bump and sticking on with duct tape.
9. When ready to wear, hold the bump to the stomach area and tie around the waist with the ribbons.

*TIP* When wearing this bump, for a more realistic effect, wear baggier pieces of clothing so the clothing doesn't stick to the exact shape of this bump.

My Script

Due to this being a trailer there is limited speech, so therefore I have only written a small script for the little dialogue there is, however in a slightly unofficial format as it is the story board that tells the plot rather than the script.
Scene 1:
Nessa: (VOICE-OVER) My name’s Nessa, I’m sixteen, and I’m pregnant. *pause*
*camera zooms out*
Nessa: Oh no that’s not the issue! There are three possible fathers, but that’s not the problem either. The problem is that these are the three possible fathers.

Scene 2
Lily: YOU’RE PREGNANT? Who’s the father?
Nessa: Well, it’s either Gibby Patterson *pause* or it could be Fredrick Walters *pause* or, there is also a possibility that it is…Eugene Fitzherbert.
Lily: *cracks up laughing* hahahaha oh my good one Ness
Nessa: No, I’m being serious

Scene 3:
No dialogue needed

Scene 4:
Nessa: I’m pregnant
Dad: Who’s the father?
Eugene: hi, that’s me!
Fredrick: yep that’s me!
Gibby: oh me also!!
*parents crack up*

Scene 5:
Nurse: Nessa Green would you like to come through?
*Nessa walks in*
Nurse: would the father also like to join?
*All three run in, bundle to get through the door*

Nurse: So boys, do you know what this is? *points at screen*
Fredrick: YES
Eugene: OH. MY. GOD.
Gibby: It’s a miracle.
*all rummage through bags, slowly lift up and take out alien*
Eugene: *emotionally* we’re having another addition to our family.
*Nurse puts her hand on Alex’s shoulder for support.”

Locker Scene
Nessa: I’m two months away from having a BABY, our baby. This is life, real life, what? are you embarrassed? Embarrassed that one of you did it with me? Because at least you don’t have the evidence right under your nose. I’m a planet. *pause and start crying* You’re just..childish..you’re just..pathetic..you’re just nerds!!
*walks away*
Fredrick: Housten we have a problem. (in the voice)

Alex and Dad
Dad: Where have you been Ness?
Nessa: Just out dealing with things way beyond my maturity level.

Alex and Dad 2 (Kitchen)
Nessa: What do I do dad?

Dad: You’ve got to find people, who love you for exactly who you are, (GO INTO VOICE-OVER) people who will support you, through all the bumps along the way. They may not be the coolest people but they’ll the kindest, even if they aren’t you’re stereotypical prince charming, they will be your knight in shining armour.
